The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a single-player post apocalyptic first-person shooter video game developed by Terminal Reality (who created the famous Ghostbusters: The Video Game and even Kinect Star Wars) and published by Activision. It is based on and canon to The Walking Dead series, in contrast to the video game by Telltale Games, which is based on and canon to the comics. Survival Instinct acts as a prequel to the TV series; it is set in the Georgia countryside and focuses on Daryl and Merle Dixon as they make their way to Atlanta during the early days of the zombie apocalypse.
It was the last game developed by Terminal Reality, who closed down on December 12, 2013.
Gameplay
The player assumes the role of Daryl Dixon, who can either fight the walkers or stealthily sneak past them. As he travels, he meets other survivors, who can either help or leave. He will have to be cautious of how much fuel, ammo and food he has, and think very strategically of who and how many he chooses to take in to his group. When he travels, he can either choose to take the highway, and save fuel but break down a lot, or take the small roads, where he will be able to scavenge from small villages and chance of breaking down is low. He can also change the vehicle he is using, ranging from a small truck to an SUV. The vehicles use up fuel which you have to watch over. When you run out of fuel, you must stop at various roadsides to try and scavenge jerry cans of fuel.
Why it Sucks
- Completely broken gameplay mechanics with lots of glitches and is likely to crash on you.
- Gameplay itself is really tedious.
- The game doesn't save your configuration forcing you to reset your graphics settings every time you launch the game.
- Awful graphics with inconsistent levels of detail. Some textures are very low resolution making it difficult to tell what the object you're looking at is, while others are higher resolution and actually look decent.
- Unrealistic and jarring material reactions with glass flying through walls and non metallic objects sounding like metal.
- Lack of meaningful storyline.
- False advertisement: Despite claiming to focus on the Dixon brothers, Merle is absent for a good amount of the game.
- Poor grasp of source material.
- Terrible zombie AI.
- The shotgun does very little damage, taking many rounds to kill zombies.
- It is easy to shove zombies by repeatedly using your knife to knock them forward.
- Awful ending.
- While the idea of choosing your routes is good, the game sometimes makes the choices pointless.
- Little zombie variety.
- Most of the locations are recycled and have no variety.
Redeeming Quality
- Voice acting is alright, at least from Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker.
