Hello /r/SimCity! After all the commotion surrounding the new SimCity I decided I wanted to give the good ol' SC4 another go. I think that even though it is 10 years old, it looks a million times better than the new one. To my huge disappointment, SimCity 2013 looks childish, bland and boring to me. In my opinion 3D is way worse than the beautiful classic isometric look of SC4 for this franchise.
Another thing is that the online community surrounding SC4 is still quite alive, with thousands of free mods that'll turn your game into anything you can dream of. While I have no interest whatsoever in the new SimCity, it did manage to make me excited again for its 10 year old predecessor, pretty crazy huh? Just look at what's within your power with some nice custom mods and tell me this game is not still insanely relevant:
So I set out and quickly discovered I can't use my old copy of SC4 Deluxe on my current system (10.8.2) and anywhere I looked I couldn't find a relevant, updated guide on how to get around this. So I took matters into own hands and finally, after 3 days of troubleshooting I now have a perfectly stable, fully working and fully updated version of SC4 Deluxe on my Mac with dozens of perfectly working mods installed. I thought it would be a good idea to share how I did it with the community since it seems that there are still lots of people interested. So, without further ado, here's how to do it:
Simcity Mac Torrent
DISCLAIMER: This method depends on the full version for Windows and while you don't need to actually own either the Mac or Windows version (or both) for it to work, it's the legal thing to do. If you own just the Mac version, I think this method should still be legal because as far as I know having one version grants you a licence for the other one automatically. Don't take my word for it though, I'm not sure! Just my two cents... To be perfectly legal you might have to buy the Windows version and use that one instead of a torrent. That being said, I'm not responsible if any of you breach copyright and quite frankly, I don't give a fuck! :D
First thing you need to do is download [Wineskin] (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads).
Go to your favourite torrent site and search for 'SimCity 4 Deluxe', make sure you download a full Windows version with lots of positive comments. I'm not gonna point you to a specific URL because I'm not your mom. There should be plenty of hits on the piratebays and kickasstorrents' of the world. Also, don't worry about cracks or NoCD's that might or might not be included, we'll get that from somewhere else. Be sure to find one with a serial.txt file though. When it finishes downloading, extract it and mount the two ISO's you'll find inside, they're probably named 'SC4DELUXE1.iso' and 'SC4DELUXE2.iso'
Extract your Wineskin zip and open 'Wineskin Winery'.
Click on the '+' sign, select the latest engine available and click on 'Download and Install'.
Click 'Create new blank wrapper' and name it however you want, I named mine: 'SimCity 4 Deluxe'. And wait for Wineskin to do its thing.
When asked to install 'Wine Mono', click cancel.
When asked to install 'Wine Gecko', click cancel.
Wineskin will ask you to view your wrapper in the finder, let it do so. Note that it's in 'User'/Applications/Wineskin/...
fn-double click the wrapper you just created. If you don't have an 'fn'-button, just right-click the wrapper and choose 'Show package contents' and open the 'Wineskin' app you'll find there.
Click 'Install Software'.
Click 'Choose Setup Executable'.
Navigate to 'SC4DELUXE1.iso' and choose 'setup.exe'.
Choose your language and give it the serial number that came with your downloaded copy.
Install it in the default path. (c:Program FilesMaxisSimCity 4 Deluxe)
Choose 'Register Later'.
Mumble 'Yeah, yeah, yeah' to yourself and click 'Ok'
Marvel upon those beautiful isometric high-rises on the install screen while you wait. Don't worry, it'll take a few minutes. If you didn't mount both iso's at the same time at some point it'll ask you to insert disk 2, just mount 'SC4DELUXE2.iso' and click 'Ok'.
Go to this page and download the 'sku 2 update', this'll update your version to the latest one available (1.1.638.0).
Go to this page, accept the terms, click on 'Bulding Architect Tool (BAT)' and download the second file 'Sim City 4 Buildings Update', this'll update your version to 1.1.640, which is the BAT update and it will enable the night lights of custom buildings you download.
Fn-click your wrapper (or use the 'show package contents method' mentioned earlier) and run both updates the same way you installed SimCity into your wrapper by clicking 'Install Software' and then 'Choose Setup Executable'. Navigate to your update exe's you just downloaded and patch that shit up. Leave the default paths!
Go to this page page and download 'SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition v1.1.638 [ENGLISH] No-CD/Fixed EXE' and extract it.
Go to your wrapper, show package contents and navigate to drive_c/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/ and replace the 'SimCity 4.exe' with the one from the crack (fixed EXE) you just downloaded.
While you're here you should decide whether you want your traffic to drive on the left side or on the right side of the road. In drive_c/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/ There should either be a folder named 'English' or a folder named 'UKEnglsh' (note that this one is without the 'i' !!!). I think this depends either on the version you downloaded or on the language you chose when installing SC. Anyway, I had a folder named UKEnglsh and my traffic was driving left hand side, which is something I don't want. Simply rename that folder to 'English' to fix it. Similarly, if you only have a folder named 'English' and you WANT your traffic to drive left hand side, rename it to 'UKEnglsh'. Some say you should change something in the registry for this to work but it worked for me without doing that...
Breathe out, relax, breathe in. We're almost there.
Fn-click your wrapper (or show package contents -> Wineskin) and click on 'Show Screen Options'. Set 'Override Wine control of screen settings?' to automatic. And check the box named 'Auto Detect GPU Info for Direct3D'. Click 'Done'.
Click 'Advanced'. Go to 'Tools', click 'Winetricks' and search for 'ddr=gdi', check the box and click 'Run'. Close, go back to the 'Configuration' tab.
In the box next to 'EXE flags', type this: '-intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -f -CPUcount:1'. 1920x1080 is my resolution, you should obviously set it to your monitor resolution. '-intro:off' will kill the EA-intro, which is important because it causes SC to glitch out if I'm correct. '-f' will set your game to fullscreen and '-CPUcount:1' will force SC to only use one CPU core. I don't think this really works but I'm putting it in there just to be sure. I use another method to force my Mac to use only one core:
This step is kind of tedious but important if you don't want your game to crash to desktop every 10-20 minutes. You should download and install Xcode (which is free on the App Store). Open it, click cancel, navigate to the menubar Xcode > Open Developer Tools > Instruments. Click cancel. Menu: Instruments > Preferences and set the slider under 'Active Processor Cores' to 1. Quit instruments. Your Mac is now forced to use only one core until you put it to sleep or restart it. You'll have to do this every time you want to play unless you save very often and don't mind it crashing on you.

Simcity 4 Deluxe Regions Downloads
There are thousands of mods available and still coming out for this game even today. The best places are:
Installing mods is easy. If it comes with an exe setup installer just do it the same way you updated your game and leave all the default paths. You can find your plugin folder under: user/documents/SimCity 4/Plugins (note that this is the mac path, don't go looking for it inside your wrapper!) It's just in your normal documents folder, pretty awesome huh? :)
One final tip: keep your plugins folder well organised. Only put in the essential files for the mods, take out all the readme's and jpgs! Also be careful with dependencies, you should really research everything you download to make sure you have the correct dependencies (and the latest versions) for the mods and be wary of doubles in your plugin folders. SimCity 4, although a WONDERFUL game, is pretty unstable, especially when you start modding it.

EDIT: Yes, as /u/charleston-kayak pointed out there is an official intel patch for the mac version available from Aspyr. Here's the link he provided, thanks! The reason I wrote this guide, however, is that in my personal experience the game runs much smoother with this method. Also, to my understanding, the mac version doesn't support some mods and is quite buggy :(

In addition all cities are clustered in a region; on the home screen of the game you can see the last selected region and you can choose from many other regions, each with different cities and areas to build.
Other developments include the emergence of densities . Now zones are subclassified in densities ranging from high to low. Higher density has a greater tendency to develop more relevant buildings of its kind, using or providing home population. However, they also have much higher requirements, and generate more traffic. Another important change is the incorporation of streets, highways are economic and are automatically created when creating a large area. Both roads and areas are more versatile no longer require a flat terrain and other versions; now they adapted to allowing land to build almost anywhere and in many different ways making the city look more realistic.
